The fences - Memory makes us free

The fences

The entire Auschwitz camp was, and still is, surrounded by a barbed wire fence, tens of kilometres of metal cable that was electrified and guarded by SS armed with machine guns and rifles.

For some prisoners that barbed wire ended up representing the most terrible shortcut to death, many of them in fact decided that it was better to die struck by electricity in a few seconds rather than dying slowly, day by day, humiliated and worn out in body and spirit by the law of the camps.

Some survivors, in recalling their tragedy, claim that not only did the fence shake and howl, but also that they could hear voices of the victims coming from that tortured earth.
